Anger at Hansa Stavanger ransom deal

GERMAN politicians have criticised the payment of a ransom to Somali pirates to effect the release of containership Hansa Stavanger , writes Anne-Christin Gröger in Cologne .

Hans-Peter Uhl, security expert in the conservative CSU party, demanded an end to “chequebook diplomacy” with Somali pirates. “We are very relieved the crew has been released, but nobody should exult about paying €2.7m ($3.8m) to criminals,” he said.
