Three fire crews were called to the ship at 1330 hrs following reports of an explosion in the engine room when the vessel was off the port of Brisbane, the Queensland Fire and Rescue Service (QFRS) said.

An Emergency Management Queensland rescue helicopter airlifted one seafarer suffering from smoke inhalation to the Royal Brisbane Hospital.

He is reported to be in a stable condition.

The fire, apparently caused by a generator malfunction, had been contained yesterday and QFRS officers surveyed the engine room.

There were 23 crew members on board the ship, which was anchored at One Mile Point before entering the port this morning.

On November 9, a paramedic and an Australian Helicopters crewman both suffered multiple injuries when they fell to the ship (see report).

That incident, in the Torres Strait, occurred when a winch malfunctioned aboard the helicopter as the men prepared to board the ship to treat a seafarer suffering cardiac problems.
