Albanese puts Pluto into the fast lane

by Rob McKay last modified Dec 23, 2009 10:56 AM

Australia's dash for gas took another step forward yesterday when Woodside’s proposed Pluto LNG Expansion Project gained major project facilitation (MPF) status from the Federal Government.

Infrastructure and transport minister Anthony Albanese said the move underscored efforts to support investments which would "position Australia to take full advantage of the global economic recovery".

If the project proceeds, it will expand the common user processing facility at the company’s Pluto LNG Park on Western Australia’s Burrup Peninsula by constructing two additional liquefied natural gas trains and associated infrastructure.

To support the expansion, Woodside will seek to tap into the more than 70trn cubic ft of discovered but undeveloped gas reserves in the Carnarvon Basin.

Woodside is expected to make a final investment decision by the end of next year.

The MPF program aims to facilitate and support private sector investment proposals through the approval processes of federal and state and territory authorities.

It also assists with the early identification of impediments to greater private sector investment.
