Germany’s largest port is in turmoil. The global recession may be easing, but trade is moving to rivals and now there are fears that its woes could outlast the current downturn, reports ALEXANDER BAKST


PEOPLE from Hamburg are so proud of their port that there is a famous saying: Hamburg does not have a port, Hamburg is a port. The port is the region’s largest employer, directly and indirectly providing over 160,000 jobs.
