Indian demand may lead to global sugar shortage

THE GLOBAL sugar trade will tighten over the next 12 months on the back of strong Indian import demand, a sugar conference in London heard last week.

Poor Indian production has turned its economy from net exporter to net importer, the conference was told.
Last year, India imported around 4m tonnes.
Next year, the figure could be higher, with up to 2m tonnes of additional import demand.
