More ships idle amid box trade gloom

Containership capacity deployed on the battered Asia-Europe trades has fallen by more than a fifth over the past six months as lines cancelled services in response to crumbling demand.

Latest figures from AXS-Alphaliner show that total capacity on the main eastwest trades shrunk by 15% during the same period, but the westbound route from Asia was the hardest hit as the recession swept through the European economies.
