Hopes for improved ship safety

International Maritime Organization (IMO) secretary-general Efthimios Mitropoulos has again voiced his hope of seeing an improvement in shipping's safety record this year in the face of an “unacceptably high level” of marine casualties in 2008.

The secretary-general was speaking at the inaugural session of the IMO sub-committee on fire protection in London.

Any attempt to adhere to safety standards lower than the highest practicable ones IMO adopts should not be an option for anyone,...
