Cargo owners and shippers risk greater exposure when using rail freight due to continuing level-crossing accidents and derailments, a leading insurer has warned this week.

Associated Marine managing director Stephen Ford's warning came after the latest level-crossing incident, in Queensland last week. This was reinforced as damage to the Melbourne-Adelaide rail line came to light this week.
