Newcastle sees growth ahead of grain increase

Trade through the port of Newcastle touched on almost 50m tonnes in the last six months of 2008.

Figures released by the Newcastle Port Corporation this morning showed the port handled 49.6m tonnes in the six months to December, with steel and iron the largest non-coal commodities.

Steel and iron totalled 226,867 tonnes in the period, up 76,360...
