Export sheep mortality rate at sea improves

by Sineva Toevai last modified Jul 01, 2009 12:27 PM

An Australian livestock industry report has showed that fewer sheep died during sea transport in 2008, compared with the previous year.

The mortality rate for the sheep exported by sea in 2008 was 0.84%, which was an improvement on the 0.97% rate recorded in 2007, according to the 2008 National livestock export industry shipboard performance report.

The overall mortality rate among the 860,000 cattle exported from Australia was 0.12%, which was slightly higher than the 0.1% rate observed in 2007, the report said.

The report also said that the mortality rate among the 3118 goats shipped from Australia last year was 0.51%, which was better than the 0.69% recorded a year earlier.
