Value of wine exports up in May

The value of Australian wine exports fell 4.6% in May from the same period a year ago to $211.8m, the latest Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS) figures showed.

Wine export values jump

According to the ABS, the value of wine exports in May was 21.1% higher than April while the average value of Australian wine exported in May was $3.02 a litre compared with $2.98 a litre in April and $3.57 a litre in May 2008

Australia exported 70m litres of locally-produced wine in May, a 19.3% increase on April while in the 12 months ending May, Australia exported 738m litres of wine valued at $2.5bn.

That was an increase of 1.8% in volume from the 12 months ending May 2008, though 10.3% lower in total value.

The seasonally-adjusted estimate for domestic sales of Australian produced white wine was 17.3m litres in May, which equated to a 9.2% rise from April and a 7.1% increase from May 2008.

Domestic sales of red and rose wine was a seasonally adjusted estimate of 13.4m litres in May, which was 5.1% higher than April and a 2.7% increase from May 2008.
