Amid tentative signs of a recovery in volume, carriers in the North and East Asia-Australia trade will increase rates from August 1 and add a peak season surcharge two weeks later.

Maersk yesterday announced an increase of US$300 a teu on all dry and reefer shipments from Japan, South Korea, Russia, China, Hong Kong and Taiwan, saying current rates were at "unsustainable levels".
