Safety the core of ATA road trip

The chief executive and the chairman of the Australian Trucking Association (ATA) kicked off a two-week road trip between Darwin and Perth yesterday to get feedback on key issues within the industry.

Chief executive Stuart St Clair and chairman Trevor Martyn will hold talks with trucking operators, federal and state politicians as well as local government on a variety of topics including road safety.

The two ATA representatives left Darwin yesterday, will be in Katherine today, Kununurra on Wednesday and then Halls Creek on Thursday.

They will also visit Broome, Port Hedland, Karratha, Carnarvon and Geraldton.

The last leg of their trip will be Perth on July 24.

In an address to the National Press Club last week, Mr St Clair said that while safety measures in the trucking industry had improved dramatically over the past 20 years, there was still much more to be done to minimise road fatalities.
