Passenger traffic declines at Sydney Airport

by Sineva Toevai last modified Jul 21, 2009 11:45 AM

Passenger numbers passing through Sydney Airport in June slumped 4.1% from the same month last year following a significant decline in tourists from Japan, Korea and India.

Macquarie Airports, the majority stakeholder in Sydney Airport, said total passenger traffic at Australia's busiest airport fell to 2.4m in June from 2.5m a year ago with declines in both domestic and international passenger numbers.

International passenger traffic fell 4% to 794,000, led by a 47% drop in visitors from Japan, a decline of 25% from Korea and a 10% fall from India.

These declines were partially offset by increased passenger traffic from the US which grew 14% from a year ago, France which rose 16% while Canada was up by 3%.

Passenger traffic figures for July will include the contributions of Sydney Airport new entrants, Tiger Airways and Delta Air Lines, which launched their services earlier this month.
