BHP Billiton iron ore production falls in June quarter
Mining giant BHP Billiton saw its iron ore production fall 10% in the June quarter compared with last year as safety initiatives at its Western Australian iron ore operations and its Rapid Growth Project 4 expansion slowed output.

BHP produced 27m tonnes of iron ore in the three months ended June 30, a fall of 4% from the March quarter, while production year-to-date rose 2% on last year, BHP said in its annual production report.
Iron ore output at its Pilbara mine in Western Australia dropped to 25.3m tonnes in the June quarter from 27.6m tonnes in the June quarter of 2008.
BHP's Hunter Valley operation produced 3m tonnes of energy coal in the June quarter, up from 2.9m tonnes last year.
Exports from the Hunter were down 23% compared with the June 2008 quarter to 1.96m tonnes.
Alumina output at the Worsley mine in WA fell to 747,000 tonnes in the quarter from 768,000 tonnes a year ago.
BHP Billiton produced a total of 1.1m tonnes of alumina in the June quarter, down 4% on a year ago although up 5% on the March 2009 quarter.
