Cost of bulk shipping could double

The cost of shipping iron ore and coal could almost double by the end of the year, according to South Korean brokerage Mirae Asset Securities.

Jay Ryu, an analyst for South Korea’s third-largest brokerage, predicted the Baltic Dry Index – the global gauge for bulk shipping – would almost double its current level to 6,000 points this year. 

The index peaked about 11,700 points in 2008.
