Talks fail to resolve Swire compensation issue

Oil spill compensation negotiations between Swire Shipping and the federal and Queensland governments still have way to go following a meeting yesterday between the shipowner and federal transport minister Anthony Albanese.

"Swire discussed the substantial offer it put to the Queensland premier last week," a Swire spokesman said.

Mr Albanese made it clear he supported Queensland premier Anna Bligh's push for total compensation for the state's clean-up costs.

The talks were "robust and constructive and discussions are continuing", was the message from both sides but, on the substantive issues, both gave little away.

One difficulty appears to be the lack of a final cost of the clean-up to Queensland, put variously at $31m-$34m.
