Owners enlist Inmarsat for communications aid

SHIPOWNERS seeking to keep one step ahead of pirates intent on attacking their ships have been contacting Inmarsat about monitoring communications in the areas where the pirates are operating, writes Steve Matthews .

Owners have asked for help in intercepting data and voice communications from shore to ship and vice-versa. Inmarsat’s maritime business director Piers Cunningham told Lloyd’s List that Inmarsat itself could not offer this facility, but said the company tells owners...
