Melbourne wharfies refuse to load Pacific Brands box

by Sineva Toevai last modified Jun 02, 2009 12:49 PM

Waterside workers at Melbourne's West Swanson Dock have refused to load a container of Pacific Brands plant equipment bound for China as part of a protest at the company's sacking of almost 2000 of its Australian employees.

"We, the employees of DP World Melbourne, are sickened by the actions of Pacific Brands in axing 1850 Australian jobs," the stevedores said in a statement released by the Maritime Union of Australia.

"We fully support the workers of Pacific Brands in their fight to retain their jobs in Australia.

"We refuse to assist Pacific Brands in sending offshore, equipment which has been purchased by us as Australian taxpayers."

Pacific Brands decided in February to shift its manufacturing operations to China, a move which left 1850 of its staff in Australia without jobs.

MUA's Victoria branch secretary Kevin Bracken stood by the workers decision.

"The workers at DP World Melbourne felt it morally wrong for that container to be sent overseas and took a principled stand," Mr Bracken said.
