by Sineva Toevai last modified Jun 04, 2009 11:51 AM

Coal exports from the port of Newcastle continue to rise while the number of ships waiting to load coal has also increased.

Figures released on the Newcastle Port Corporation website this week showed that the amount of coal shipped rose to 1.9m tonnes in the week ending June 1 from 1.59m tonnes in the week ending May 25.

There were 40 ships queued outside the port to load about 3m tonnes of coal during the week, compared with 35 ships which had waited to load 2.8m tonnes of coal a week earlier.

The coal ships waited an average 9.7 days to load the coal at the port, down marginally from the average waiting time of 9.8 days in the week ending May 25.
