Making the announcement, prime minister Kevin Rudd said that Ms McKew will assist with infrastructure roll out, with a particular focus on community infrastructure and local government.

Ms McKew, a former ABC Television personality, was previously parliamentary secretary for early childhood education and child care.

Ms McKew won the New South Wales seat of Bennelong at the 2007 federal election, defeating the then prime minister, John Howard.

Born and educated in Queensland, Ms McKew made the switch to politics after a 30-year stint in print and broadcast journalism.
