Tug crew released after discount ransom paid
Relatives and friends of 11 Nigerian seafarers held captive by Somali pirates raised more than US$150,000 to secure their release after a Nigerian tug operator pleaded that it could not meet demands for US$1m.
Omar Jamal, director of the Somali Justice Advocacy Center in St Paul, Minnesota, told Lloyd’s List that his group had acted on humanitarian grounds after being approached by relatives and had not made any profit on the transaction.
