Japanese navy cleared to fire at pirate vessels
Japanese naval vessels participating in the international counter-piracy effort off Somalia will be allowed to use force to protect merchant vessels irrespective of their flag, after the Japan's parliament voted to overturn pacifist restrictions imposed in the wake of the Second World War.
So far, the two Japanese destroyers in the Gulf of Aden have only been able to assist civilian ships if they were either Japanese-registered or carrying Japanese nationals or Japanese cargo, Agence France Presse reported.
