Australian imports slide 9% in May

Australian imports of merchandise fell by 9% in May, losing an estimated value of almost $1.5bn.

Australia records import fall in May

The value of overseas imports to Australia fell to $14.7bn in May from a revised $16.2bn in April and $17.3bn in March, latest figures from the Australian Bureau of Statistics show.

Beverages and tobacco imports dropped 23% from April to $142m in May, chemicals fell 8.8% to $1.8bn and miscellaneous manufactured goods dipped 10% to $2.1bn, the bureau said.

Imports of mineral fuels, lubricants and related materials were almost unchanged at $1.84bn in May from $1.87bn in April.
