Half of Qantas 787 fleet delayed or cancelled
Qantas has denied any connection between design flaws and delays to Boeing's 787 and its decision yesterday to postpone or cancel delivery of almost half its original order of the new aircraft.
Double blow: Boeing 787 order cancellations just as production problems delay test flights
The airline ordered 65 of the aircraft in late 2005 but yesterday chose to postpone delivery of 15 of the 787-8s and cancel a further 15 787-9s.
Its total order will now be 50, with the first to be delivered to its low-cost carrier, Jetstar, in mid-2013.
The move is expected to save the airline about $3.7bn.
Qantas chief Alan Joyce rejected speculation that there was a link between the decision and recent production problems, which had forced Boeing to again delay the first test flight.
The last of the aircraft is now scheduled for delivery in 2017.
