Nine-tenths of trade by sea’ is just myth

NEW research from Lloyd’s Marine Intelligence Unit (LMIU) shows that the widely used statistic that 90% of global trade is carried by sea is inaccurate and that the real figure is about 75%.

The research has major implications for decision makers and analysts.
The revised figure is based on a bottom-up calculation of global seaborne trade measured in both volume terms and by value.
