Data centre delays threatening long-range tracking deadline

SHIPOWNERS are being warned to ensure their vessels are compliant with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) requirements for long-range vessel tracking before the end of June – even though the data centres the positions get reported into may not be up and running.

Battling with the deadline: the Emsa-run LRIT data centre in Lisbon is still collating all the fleet data from the 30-plus flag states that will use it.

Long-range identification and tracking became mandatory as of the start of this year, but as there were no data centres authorised at that time, there was a consensus among port state control authorities that there would be no inspections onboard...
