LNG is 50: Pioneer paves way for dramatic growth
On February 20, 1959 an exciting new chapter in the history of the shipping industry opened when the first seaborne cargo of liquefied natural gas arrived at Canvey Island in the UK on board the 5,000 cu m Methane Pioneer .
Carried from Louisiana's Lake Charles in the Gulf of Mexico, this cargo of LNG took its rightful place in the history of energy shipments that began with the sea transport of lamp oil in amphorae in the ancient world.
