South Africa boost from diversions

Moves by container lines to divert services between Asia and Europe via the Cape of Good Hope are set to boost box volumes at ports in South Africa, including the new Ngqura container terminal, according to a top port official.

Transnet Port Terminals chief strategy officer Mervin Chetty said the largest increase was expected to be in transhipment volumes as lines rationalise port calls and use South Africa's ports to feed cargo to other destinations in Africa.
