The financial crash dominated headlines in late 2008, but the year has also emerged as one of the worst in recent history for catastrophe losses.
In a new study, Swiss Re estimates that man-made and natural catastrophes last year took the lives of more than 240,500 people and led to economic losses of around US$269bn.
