Port Hedland's export numbers climb

Total exports from Port Hedland in Western Australia's Pilbara region, rose 7% in April compared with the corresponding period a year ago.

The port, which Fortescue Metals uses to ship its iron ore, exported 11.7m tonnes in April, compared with 10.9m tonnes in April 2008, Port Hedland Port Authority's latest figures showed.

Shipments of iron ore climbed to 11.3m tonnes from 10.6m tonnes last April, boosted by exports to China of 9.17m tonnes.

The port shipped 13.1m tonnes of iron ore in March.

General cargo exports also jumped to 122 tonnes in April from zero a year earlier while total imports in April more than doubled to 69,619 tonnes from 33,784 tonnes.
