ACCC's go-ahead for interim Newcastle capacity plan

by samc last modified May 14, 2009 01:01 PM

The Australian Competition and Consumer Commission (ACCC) has finalised its authorisation for coal capacity arrangements through the port of Newcastle until June 30.

The approval clears the coal industry to continue the export arrangements put in place as a result of ongoing discussions about long-term capacity, including how to divide the current coal terminal capacity and allow new entrants to the market.

The latest ACCC clearance, for the so-called "PWCS Stage One Allocation", is designed to regulate the coal vessel queue off the port until the next stage of discussions is completed by the end of next month.

A separate application from the industry, due to be sent to the ACCC soon, is expected to cover the long-term arrangements which are now being discussed.
