Customs assist in $25m drug bust
A group of detectives from Customs and Border Protection and other law enforcement agencies have arrested a Sydney man who allegedly possessed a precursor used to make about $25m of methyl amphetamine.
Detectives from the Joint Asian Crime Group arrested the 41-year old on May 10 and charges laid against him include the alleged manufacture an illegal drug and the possession of a precursor used to make a prohibited drug.
Items allegedly seized by the detectives included 70 kg of pseudoephdedrine and about $868,500 in cash.
"This is a significant operation which has disrupted a highly organised drug manufacturing syndicate," JACG commander Peter Baker said in a statement issued by Customs and Border Protection.
"Detectives involved in this multi-agency operation have successfully closed a clandesine laboratory and prevented about $25m worth of crystal methylamphetamine being sold on our streets."
The man was remanded in custody and is due to re-appear in court on July 13.
