Meat production dips in the first quarter
Meat produced by Australia in the three months ending March 31 dropped from the corresponding period last year, according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (ABS).
Meat production fell to 994,470 tonnes compared with about 1m tonnes in the 2008 March quarter.
Pig meat dipped to 79,143 tonnes from 93,647 tonnes, reflecting a 3% fall in the number of pigs slaughtered to 1.1m in the quarter.
The amount of mutton produced fell to 57,225 tonnes from 66,342 tonnes.
About 119.9m chickens were slaughtered in the quarter, producing 211, 978 tonnes of chicken meat, which is up from the 199,665 tonnes in the 2008 March quarter.
Beef production increased to 530,113 tonnes from 529,932 tonnes, lamb meat rose to 108,859 tonnes from 106,937 tonnes, and veal produced rose to 7,152 tonnes from 6,475 tonnes.
