by Sineva Toevai last modified May 20, 2009 12:36 PM

Fewer passengers travelled on Australian domestic airlines for a second consecutive month this year, according to the latest Bureau of Infrastructure, Transport and Regional Economics (BITRE) figures.

Including regional operations, there were 4.23m passengers on Australian domestic carriers in March, down 1.7% from the same period a year ago, BITRE said.

Revenue passenger kilometres performed were 4.79bn in March, which is a 1.1% fall from March 2008, while capacity – measured by available seat kilometres – dropped 1.2% from a year ago to 6.12bn.

With capacity falling marginally faster than traffic, industry wide load factors rose to 78.2% across all sectors in March, compared with 78.1% in March 2008.

The route with the highest load factor for the month was the Maroochydore to Melbourne route with 91.5% while Kalgoorlie to Perth recorded the lowest of 55.5%.

Sydney remained Australia's busiest airport with 1.9m passenger movements in March, accounting for 22.4% of all domestic passenger traffic.

Melbourne was the second busiest with 1.7m passenger movements followed by Brisbane's 1.2m.
