Victorian bushfire victims seek shipping community assistance
Families and businesses affected by the bushfires in Victoria's Marysville and surrounding towns hope the shipping community will provide them with containers as they attempt to piece their lives back together.
Bec Adams of the Victorian Bushfire Case Management Service said that while the victims had received an “overwhelming” response in material aid and support, it is shipping containers they really need now.
“A limited number of shipping containers have been generously provided on loan in addition to those gratefully donated,” Ms Adams said.
"However, the demand far outweighs the supply and is raising tensions amongst the community.”
About 100 shipping containers are needed for various storage needs, Ms Adams said.
Because of the shortage of shipping containers, Ms Adams said that the priority is now going to individuals and families in the affected areas.
However, if there were a lot more shipping containers, the service could also assist small businesses and holiday home owners with storage needs, Ms Adams said.
“Now three months after the fires, anxiety is rising with the recovery and re-building phase and the expectation to move forward.”
“Integral to the anxiety felt, is the need to have physical structures and individual possessions reinstated, however storage is minimal, if not non-existent, for many.”
Some individuals believe that due to “very limited storage” they might be forced to either return or decline goods being donated, she said.
