Pacific Dawn delayed after swine flu detected

The Carnival P&O cruise ship, Pacific Dawn, was held in Sydney for several hours yesterday after the company's screening process returned positive human swine flu tests on two incoming passengers.

The outbound cruise sailed at 2230 hrs yesterday on her scheduled 10-night cruise to Queensland following clearance from New South Wales Health.

“We have worked very closely with the NSW and federal authorities and Pacific Dawn has sailed with the full approval of these authorities,” Carnival said.

“We offered an additional precaution of disembarking a small number of crew who have reported flu-like symptoms.

"There is no reason to believe these crew have human swine flu, but we volunteered this as an extra measure.”

All crew onboard will be treated with anti-viral medication, which will also be available at no cost to any passengers should they display flu-like symptoms.

Extra precautions had been taken, including:

• Screening practices for passengers and crew;

• Adhering to international guidelines for reporting and treatment of persons with suspected H1N1;

• Cleaning and sanitisation of ships to minimise the spread of any contagious disease.
