Newcastle Port Corporation has held exploratory talks with several parties about potentially accommodating a liquefied natural gas (LNG) plant at the port.
"They are very preliminary discussions with interested parties about undertaking some LNG exports from Newcastle," a port corporation spokesman said, declining to name the parties.
Eastern Star Gas is reportedly among the group of parties to have expressed interest and held discussions.
The gas company could not be reached for comment.
ASX-listed Eastern Star Gas is currently focused on exploring coal gas seams in the Gunnedah Basin.
