Damages from the sunflower oil pollution by chemical tanker Alize at Ilichevsk on April 29 have been estimated at USUS$400,000.
Documents are being prepared for action against the ship owner to pay the costs. According to local media reports, the crew flooded the deck with sunflower oil and decided to get rid of it by hosing it overboard into the port waters.
The clean-up operation and collection of oil from the port waters continued for four days during which nine tonnes of oil were removed. The vessel remained under arrest.
