Concept for future
JAPANESE shipowner NYK has revealed its exploratory design NYK Super Eco Ship 2030, the company’s concept for a sustainable boxship
The 8,000 teu containership is capable of emitting far fewer emissions than similar-sized vessels, NYK said. The designers have used the possibilities from technologies that have the potential of being realised by 2030. Power will primarily come from a 40 MW liquefied natural gas-based fuel cell, with solar and wind power providing up to five MW. Its use will lead to a 62% reduction in CO emissions, the company claimed. The 353 metre vessel was designed by NYK subsidiary MTI, Italian designer Garroni Progetti and Finnish marine consultant Elomatic Marine. The design, pictured, follows on from a concept vessel revealed in 2004 when Scandinavian shipowners Wilh Wilhelmsen and Wallenius Lines designed Orcelle, their sustainable car carrier.
