Hanjin ups rates on Asia-Med
HANJIN Shipping, South Korea’s largest shipowner, will increase freight rates on its services from Asia to the Mediterranean from June 1.
Hanjin said it had decided to introduce a series of freight rate rises in June and July, claiming such increases were unavoidable if the level of service being offered was to be maintained.
Hanjin’s service from China through south-east Asia and on to the Mediterranean would be subject to an increase of US$250 per teu from June 1. On July 1, Hanjin will impose a US$300 per teu increase on trades from Asia to northern Europe and Scandinavia.
Hanjin introduced similar increases on its Asia-Europe trades from April. The company said that it was pleased that the rises had met with a considerable amount of acceptance.
Hanjin continues to negotiate further rate hikes on its Asia-US trades, but the outcome is not expected before July.
Last week Hanjin took delivery of the 4,300 teu Hanjin Monaco, the last of a series of eight vessels ordered from Samsung Heavy Industries in 2005.
