Freed to attack again?

by Jim Wilson last modified May 08, 2009 02:49 PM

THE question of what happens to the hundreds of pirates being disarmed and released by naval forces remains unclear.

Anecdotal evidence from European Union naval officers aboard Operations Atalanta vessels suggests that many of the suspects return to attempt another hijacking, often within the space of just a few days.
Coalition maritime forces, however, have claimed that this is not the case. Addressing a piracy conference in London last week, Commodore Per Bigum Christensen, who heads up the Danish element of the Coalition Task Force anti-piracy operations, said that biometric data on all suspected pirates captured by naval forces was being collected and according to their analysis, none of those released have been caught a second time.
Whether this analysis supports claims that the naval presence in the region is deterring attacks or the suspects have just avoided capture a second time is unclear.
