THE ENVIRONMENTAL Protection Authority (EPA) has given conditional clearance for a $1.8bn iron ore project in Western Australia’s mid-west region.

Gindalbie Metals’ proposed Karara project will be located at the Blue Hills Range, about 220 km from Geraldton.
The EPA said that with the protection of part of the Mungada Ridge within a Class A nature reserve and implementation of other ministerial conditions, the development could proceed.
WA premier Colin Barnett said the Gindalbie project, which remained subject to final government approval, would provide 1,500 jobs during construction and 600 long-term jobs during operation.
