CHEVRON Australia has been granted conditional approval by Western Australia’s environmental regulator for its multi-billion dollar Gorgon liquefied natural gas export development on Barrow Island.
The Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) said while it remained opposed to the location of industry on a class A nature reserve, the proposal could meet the EPA’s objectives under stringent conditions.
The facility, which will have an initial production capacity of 15m tonnes, will be built on the Barrow Island nature reserve, about 150 km off the state’s northwest coast.
