Austal launches new US shipbuilding facility

by Sineva Toevai last modified Nov 11, 2009 11:10 AM

Western Australian shipbuilder Austal has opened a new $88m manufacturing complex in the US, equipped with all the facilities needed to build up to three vessels over 100 metre in length each year.

Stage one of the "modular manufacturing facility" has 35,000 square metres of manufacturing space, a 7,900 square metre warehouse and a car park for more than 2000 vehicles.

The facility meant Austal was well-positioned to accommodate major multi-vessel programs, Austal managing director Bob Browning said.

"Not only is this significant investment poised to have a positive effect on the surrounding economy, it also gives Austal unrivalled capacity to facilitate the construction of the US Navy's Littoral Combat Ship and Joint High Speed Vessel programs," Mr Browning said.

"Through expanding our modular manufacturing capability, we have introduced increased efficiency into every aspect of the shipbuilding process which will translate into faster delivery times and siginificant cost savings across each vessel."
