P&O Cruises has cancelled a seven-night Pacific Sun cruise that was due to start on Saturday.

The ship had been in the Forgacs Cairncross dry dock for refurbishment and scheduled routine maintenance when it was discovered that a custom-made replacement bearing on the propeller shaft was needed, a spokesman for the Carnival subsidiary said.

A replacement part was to be flown in from Europe with specialist engineers to install it in the 1900-passenger ship.

That operation would take until the next sailing on November 21, Carnival said.

The next P&O Cruises ship due for a routine dry-dock examination was the Pacific Dawn in May.
