Newcastle Port Corporation appears likely to avert immediate strike action by its 15 marine pilots after a new salary proposal was put on the table at the 11th hour.

The Australian Maritime Officers Union (AMOU) was on Friday given legal authority to take industrial action after the Newcastle pilots unanimously passed a motion to strike at the world’s biggest coal export harbour.
