Montara well remains under surveillance

by Rob McKay last modified Nov 18, 2009 01:17 PM

While the Montara oil and gas well has been plugged, vessels and equipment remain on standby and the clean-up continues, the Australian Maritime Safety Authority said yesterday.

Daily observation flights are still being conducted and  patches of oil large enough to be dealt with by containment and recovery operations are rapidly decreasing as no fresh oil had leaked from the Montara platform since early November, AMSA said.

The latest aerial observations revealed isolated patches of weathered oil about 35 nautical miles from the Australian coast, 190nm from the Indonesian coast and 45nm from marine parks.

Highly weathered oil seen in the vicinity of Holothuria Banks appears to have dispersed.

MARCO oil recovery vessels intended to retrieve this oil are now on standby.

"While operations have slowed, all assets and personnel remain on standby until such time as PTTEP Australasia can offer assurances that there is no longer any risk of oil leakage from the Montara well head platform," AMSA said.
