Wallenius Wilhelmsen Logistics (WWL) will use P&O Automotive and General Stevedoring (POAGS) instead of Patrick as its Melbourne stevedore, the vehicle carrier said today.

New direction: WWL to change Melbourne stevedores

WWL will relocate vessel operations to Appleton Dock from Webb Dock, which WWL has used since 2000.

Its deal with Patrick expires at the end of the year and the first docking under the new agreement will be on January 7.

"WWL has previously berthed at Appleton Dock," commercial and supply chain management vice president for Oceania Mark Guscott said.

"Historical challenges with the site have now been addressed and the dock is being readied for our operation which includes additional upgrades to the general facilities.

"It’s an exciting time.

"Also recent extensive improvements to the road infrastructure around Appleton Dock have now been completed.

"These now provide direct access to the City Link freeway, providing improved accessibility for our customers and transport companies delivering or collecting their goods.

"The infrastructure and improvements were paramount in our decision making process."

He added that POAGS would provide WWL with improved access to berthing through prioritisation mechanisms and a facility "managed by a company with which we have a national relationship".

"POAGS will be our stevedore in the four main ports from January 1, 2010, providing a national service and consistency to our customers experience," Mr Guscott said.
