There aren't too many container trucks rumbling around Sydney's CBD after Sydney Harbour was closed to commercial shipping two years ago.

However, not even state government policy could stop pedestrians and drivers from gathering for a stickybeak at a semi-trailer and the tree it managed to uproot yesterday.

The 40-ft box being hauled along York St collided with a protruding tree just before 1.30pm, leaving the road awash with green and the driver red-faced.

Witnesses were relieved to find that no one was trapped under the fallen tree.

The driver was unhurt and the front of the truck relatively undamaged.

The road was closed for almost an hour as the uprooted tree was cut into pieces and carried away.
